COUPLES THERAPY

Intimate romantic relationships can be very challenging to navigate and maintain, especially when we’ve survived emotional neglect, abuse and/or trauma. We carry our experiences of our initial/primary relationships with our caregivers into the romantic intimate relationships as adults and this can sometimes create a very difficult and unpleasant dynamics with our partners. We can easily get stuck in these patterns and feel helpless and hopeless about shifting, and about the relationship itself. Conflicts can worsen, become toxic and desperately unresolved. Love isn’t enough to sustain a relationship and we need to engage in some painful, deep and uncomfortable explorations and confrontations.

I see the relationship between the partners as my actual client in couples therapy. I work with you both to enable you to become a team that finds a new way of taking care of the relationship that exists between you.

My approach to couples therapy is informed by emotionally focused therapy and psychodynamic therapy. Together we identify the root causes of various dynamics that are at play in the relationship, both consciously and unconsciously. The aim is to find a way to understand these projections and enactment , process them and assign them to their origins, and find a different way to relate to each other in the present. I work with diverse couples; heterosexual, queer/gay, interracial, in both normative as well as non-normative relationships set ups. I also work with couples who are separating and/or divorced and want to work towards a better communication and/or closure. Just like individual Psychotherapy, couples therapy is most effective when the sessions are attended weekly, on a regular basis.
